What is MOLLE? All About Modular Gear Systems

If you’ve ever browsed tactical backpacks, military clothing, or other outdoor gear, you’ve most likely stumbled across something called the “MOLLE system.” If you haven’t, this article will help you understand why it’s a game-changer for anyone who loves having their gear accessible, organized, and ready to go.

What is MOLLE?

Pronounced “Molly,” the MOLLE system allows you to attach and organize all kinds of equipment and tools to your backpack, rucksack, vests, and more. From utility knives and magazine pouches to canteens and first-aid kits, MOLLE lets you maximize your adventure while keeping your gear secure.

What does MOLLE Stand For?

MOLLE is a military acronym for “Modular, Lightweight, Load-carrying Equipment” and was created as an update to the ALICE (All-purpose, Lightweight, Individual Carrying Equipment) system in the 1990s. ALICE was introduced in the 70s to revolutionize how soldiers organized their kit, allowing them to separate personal items from combat gear and to distribute weight across their shoulders, backs, and hips more efficiently. However, the attachment straps used in the ALICE system caused soldiers’ items to swing and sometimes fall off or clank together loudly, which prompted the much-needed update in the 90s.

How Does MOLLE Work?

MOLLE uses a grid of heavy-duty nylon PALS (Pouch Attachment Ladder System) webbing loops stitched in rows across backpacks, vests, and other load-bearing gear. These loops serve as anchor points for attaching pouches, tools, and other items securely and closely to the user’s gear.

Here’s where you might see MOLLE systems in use:

  • First responder gear

  • Tactical vests

  • Survival kits

  • Motorcycle gear

  • Utility belts

And here’s what you might see attached to a MOLLE system (or what you might want to attach to your own):

  • Canteen carriers

  • Magazine pouches

  • First-aid kits

  • Radios

  • Binocular pouches

  • Flashlight holders

  • Holsters

  • Ropes

  • D-rings for attaching carabiners

You can attach a MOLLE system yourself using these steps, or you can purchase a MOLLE vest, bag, or belt with a built-in system, like our Commando Mesh UHM Jacket.

The MOLLE system isn't just for soldiers or survivalists. Anyone who needs rugged, reliable, and customizable storage on the go can benefit from a MOLLE system on their bag, vest, or belt. Whether you're heading into the backcountry, prepping your go-bag, or just organizing your everyday carry, MOLLE is one of the smartest ways to keep your gear exactly where you need it.
